Direct Democracy passes through Santral Istanbul

The “Omnibus for Direct Democracy in Germany,” as it is officially called, was on a tour of Eastern Europe including Turkey. It stopped over at Bilgi's Santral campus discussing their ideas with students. The father of the idea is the late German artist Joseph Beuys. The passengers or more correctly the campaigners on the bus argue that, to vote just to elect representatives in the legislative assembly is not sufficient for a full democratic system, citizens should be provided with the means to voice their say about concrete issues concerning law and politics.

Joseph Beuys was one of the exceptional artists of the 20th Century. He believed that art should not be separated from life and presented in elite institutions. “Art alone makes life possible. Without art man is inconceivable in physiological terms,” was his teaching which he considered his “greatest work of art. Beuys and his students’ works are exhibited at the Sakip Sabanci Museum on the banks of Bosporus.
